MONTI DISTRICT TOUR – ROME GUIDES
MONTI DISTRICT TOUR – ROME GUIDES
The Monti District Tour will allow us to learn about the history and the development of what is today considered the “first district of Rome”. We will investigate the events that led to the foundation of some of the most important churches in all of Rome.
Our visit will start from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which can also be visited with the Tour of the Basilicas, considered (in competition with Santa Maria in Trastevere) the first church in Rome to be built and therefore dedicated in honour of the Virgin. The Church contains wonderful treasures, such as the mosaic apse and the tomb of Bernini.
Afterwards, we will visit the Church of Santa Prassede: inside of it, we will admire the 9th Century mosaics decorating the apse and the triumphal arch, made by Pope Pascal I.
The real surprise, however, will be the small Sacello di San Zenone: built as a funeral place by the Pope for his mother Theodora, it is entirely covered with wonderful gold mosaics.
Finally, we will continue our Monti District Tour heading towards the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli, taking its name from the chains of St. Peter’s, kept inside. The real pearl of this Church, however, is the funerary monument of Julius II, created by Michelangelo. At the center of it, we will examine the famous Moses, one of the most mysterious and profound works of art history: Freud himself made a study to investigate its true nature.
